New Map Shots -- Tuesday, January 22, 2002
Here are a couple shots of de_chateau, the new 1.4 map coming from Macman and Ido. It plays quite well and as expected from these guys, looks gorgeous. Have a look:
Also out now at your local bookstore is the Official CS Strategy guide from Versus in collaboration with Germany's Future Press. Feel free to pick it up if you're in need of some strats.
And last item of note is that the promotional site for CS: Condition Zero is now up. Point your browser to www.cs-conditionzero.com to visit. For an exhaustive preview of what's to come in CZ, be sure to check out Rizzuh's CSnation preview.

Retail Map Pack Out -- Tuesday, January 8, 2002
Counte-strike.net posted the CS Retail Missing Mappack for those of you using retail and don't have all the maps that CS Mod owners have. The file is 13 megs.
Gooseman and Cliffe are out here at Valve working with Eric Smith and company on 1.4, among other things. Macman and Cliffe does have a new map coming and theye're currently testing a way to thwart bunnyhoppers. No date is set for 1.4, but one of the more exciting aspects of it will be Valve's new anti-cheating initiative -- which is scheduled to come out around the same time.

HL ATI "overflow" fix out! -- Friday, September 21, 2001
As promised, here are the Half-Life and CS Retail ATI "overflow" fix patches straight from Valve. Only download this patch if you have an ATI video card and are having "overflow error" problems. Please make sure that you download the correct version of this patch -- depending on whether you have CS Mod version or CS Retail. Also keep in mind that this is a HL engine issue (not CS specific), so this will affect HL and all mods. Also note that this file will also fix Intel graphics chipsets having the problem:
Half-Life (CS Mod Version) owners ATI patch
CS Retail owners ATI patch

CS 1.3 Released! -- Friday, September 21, 2001
Update: Valve has informed me that they will have a small patch out for those running ATI cards having the "overflow" error messages. This will most likely occur today (Friday). Stay tuned right here to cs.net -- we'll have the patch as soon as it is ready.
CS v1.3 for both Mod and Retail versions is out! Head on over to the downloads page to grab the files. Each version comes with an upgrade from 1.2 / 1.0.02 or a full installation. Make sure you grab the right files, depending on whether or not you have the retail or mod version of CS. Make sure, if you have the mod version, that you have updated your HL to 1.1.0.8!
Please note: If you are using an ATI video card, you must run in Direct3d (D3D) for the time being. If you are getting the overflow error you are either cheating or using an ATI card. This is a Half-Life engine issue and affects HL and all HL mods. This bug will be fixed soon by Valve.

[ CS 2 Years Old!] [ Tuesday, June 19, 2001 ]
Today, June 19th, marks the 2 Year Anniversary of beta 1 of CS being released. That's right -- CS is two years old today! Special thanks to all the players and Valve Software for making this a great two years.
We haven't said much about CS 1.2 in a while, but the voice communication going in is quite a bit of work to get right. Don't expect it this month, but soon.
[ Counter-Map Pack] [ Monday, June 11, 2001 ]
The guys over at Counter-Map have just put out a brand new mappack that is "filled to the brim with high quality, fun, and best of all NEW maps." If you're hurting for new maps, and you probably are, then head over and grab this new pack.
Also, don't forget to sign up for Recon2k, the DC LAN fest coming at the end of the month. Myself and a few cs.net hosted site members will be attending, so come have some fun if you're on the east coast.
[ CS Source Art Released] [ Wednesday, June 6, 2001 ]
Steve Theodore of Valve has released the source files for the CS 1.0 player models. You can grab the 118 meg file right here from Fileplanet. Note that these files are "still copyright Valve 2000-2001 (all rights reserved) and to add that it is free for non-commercial use only - ie you and/or the mod makers can't charge for redistributing it."
[ This Year's E3] [ Tuesday, May 15, 2001 ]
This year's E3 Expo, which is being held the 17th through the 19th in Los Angeles, is quickly approaching. Gooseman and I will be there checking out all the cool stuff that E3 always has, so if you see us make sure to say hello. Just in time for E3 comes some info about Counter-Strike: Condition Zero -- the new CS single player episode being done in house by Valve, which was just uncovered by Computer Gaming World. All right, we need to finish packing..
[ New Hosted Site] [ Monday, April 23, 2001 ]
I'm glad to announce the newest hosted site to open here on the cs.net network, @lic0mb's CS Skinshack. The site has all your custom player model and weapon model needs. Go check it out. In other hosted site news, CS Radio is back and armed with another live show. And congrats goes to ChuChuRocket, who was named Rizzuh's successor over at CSN. John Rizzuh Jensen will be missed.
And don't forget that the large CS Lan event Recon 2000 is coming up very soon now. Here are some details straight from Brian Steele:
Recon 2000 (www.recon2000.com) has reached over 200 registered users with over two months to go before event launch. The long awaited Online Player Management system is now online and open to all registered users. For those curious as to just how big the capital expo center is, we made several pictures available for your viewing pleasure. Recon 2000 will be one of the largest gaming events ever held in North America to date. The doors will open on June 29th at 8:00am and will close on July 2nd, 10:00am. All tickets will be sold through our online registration system for organizational purposes. No tickets will be sold at the door. The Recon 2000 event registration deadline is Friday, June 8th.
Word is that the CS RAdio guys will be there broadcasting live from the event. Some CS Team members might even show up.
And in slightly silly news, Gooseman posted a "developer at work" screenshot of him working over at VoodooExtreme. Mmm, that bread looks tasty.
[ About the new Multicast Spectator] [ Friday, April 13, 2001 ]
Stomper John Callaham has an interview posted with Valve's Erik Johnson regarding the new Multicast Spectator mode that will be debuted at the Speakeasy.net CS Tourney down in Dallas, which has just started. Click that link to find out what it's all about. I've had a chance to test it first hand and I can tell you it's very cool and should bring competition spectating to a new level.
And speaking of the Speakeasy.net CS CPL Tourney, good luck to all the teams competing. There should be some intense matches, so we're looking forward to seeing the demos from the event. You can stop by ShackES for full coverage.

[ CS 1.1c Server Side Patch] [ Monday, April 9, 2001 ]
We've released a 1.1c Server Side only patch for server admins to grab and install. This is mainly a fix for the "invincible legs" bug when using certain weapons. There are a few lingering hitbox issues that will have to be addressed in a client side patch or upgrade (probably 1.2). You can grab the 13 meg .exe over at Fileplanet or the Linux Patch. Keep in mind that these patches are only for server admins to install, clients need not worry about them. Also note that clients with a stock 1.1 install will still be able to connect fine. Thanks for your patience.
[ Hitbox & Crouching Bugs] [ Wednesday, April 4, 2001 ]
We just want everyone to know that the CS Team and Valve are aware of the CS 1.1 Hitbox and Crouching bugs pointed out in various "CS dissections." These fixes will be included with CS 1.2, if not sooner. We'll announce right here on the site when this will be available.
[ Fixed Installer Posted] [ Saturday, March 24, 2001 ]
The downloads page has been updated with fixed 1.0 > 1.1 Mod version installers. The fixed installer csv1011b.exe, simply has the correct version of de_vegas. If you have already updated to 1.1, you do not need to use this file, instead you should just grab this fix. Webmasters, please update your mirrors with this fixed file (getting rid of the old Mod upgrader). Feel free to email me with mirror urls of the new file.
Also, if you're running *any* of the upgrade files or full files and are getting a "de_dust cannot be opened/upgraded" (or similar) error, make sure the installer is pointing to the correct directory. For Mod version it should be the /half-life/ folder and for Retail version it should be /counter-strike/ (by default).
Lastly, I'm looking for CS 1.1 screenshots to update the screenshots page with. You may e-mail me a zip of your shots in .jpg format. Please no software rendering, and please use at least a resolution of 800*600. Make sure the shots are action packed and noteworthy. Thanks.

[ CS Retail Mappack Released! / Vegas Fix] [ Saturday, March 17, 2001 ]
CS Retail owners, the downloads page has been updated with the Unofficial "Missing Mappack." The file is cs_mappack.exe and clocks in at 17.5 megs. This pack will give you all the official maps not included in the CS retail install and subsequent patch. Note that this Mappack is unofficial and unsupported and is presented "as is." Once again remember that this file is for HL: CS Retail owners only.
On a related note, if you retail users wish to do further unofficial hacking, drop by N3xty's place (Nextwish.org) for his Weapons Name Fix which will give you the real weapon names. Also of note is this thread on the forums which points out that you should (if you don't have a Voodoo card) make sure your gl_max_size is set to "512" rather than "256" (type gl_max_size "512" in the console). Finally, usukit, from CSRadio has posted a 1.1 only Gamespy3d tab.
Also, please note that the Windows Mod Version Upgrade installer has the wrong version of de_vegas.bsp. This is the reason why vegas is giving people some mismatch errors. If you used the Mod Version Upgrader, download this fix which will give you the correct version. Extract the zip to your /cstrike/ directory. We will fix the upgrade installers in the next few days.

[ Executable Out of Date Error Fix.] [ Thursday, March 15, 2001 ]
Ok, I'm going to try to be a as clear as possible in explaining how to get rid of the "Your executable is out of date" error some people are getting. First of all, let me define the two different versions of Counter-Strike. First, if you bought just the game Half-Life (with an orange box with the lambda symbol), or Game of the Year Edition Half-Life, then you are using Counter-Strike MOD. If you bought, Half-Life: Counter-Strike (with a box that specifically says "Half-Life: Counter-Strike, and has two Counter-Terrorists on the box), or the Platiunum Pack, then you are using HL: CS RETAIL. So the distinction is between MOD and RETAIL. Everyone has one or the other.
Now, if you're having the "Executable out of date" problem with CS MOD version, it has to do with your version of HL. Here is the solution: First of all, make sure you've installed the correct version of CS 1.1 (see downlaods page for which file is right for you). Make sure you have the 1.1.0.6 Half-Life patch installed (which was released Wednesday) (you should have installed 11041106.exe if you previously had 1.1.0.4 installed or hl1106.exe if you had any other version of HL installed) The Leak Fix will only help you if you installed this HL 1.1.0.6 patch and it happened to be a leaked copy. Running that file will not hurt you if you have any version of 1.1.0.6 installed.
If you installed the leak fix, either before applying the HL 1.1.0.6 patch or having never installed HL 1.1.0.6 at all, you will have a problem. If this happened to you, you must install hl1106.exe.
To recap, this is what was happening to most people:
1. You are running the HL: CS MOD version, and download the CS update on Tuesday from our site.
2. Wednesday at 11:00am PST you stop authenticating, because HL is out of date.
3. Confusion sets in ("what's going on, I have CS 1.1 installed!"
If all else fails, download hl1106.exe and install it. Your problem should then go away. Any of said files can be found in the downloads section. The leak fix (leak_upgrade.exe) can be grabbed here
Now, if you have the RETAIL version of CS and are getting "Exec is out of date," do this:
1. Uninstall CS (or just delete everything in your counter-strike and cstrike directories)
2. Download the patch from Fileplanet (cs1001.exe is the name of the file, MAKE SURE that is the one you download!)
3. Reinstall CS from your CD.
3. Install cs1001.exe
4. It should then work.
**Note that cs1001.exe will only work for the English version of HL:CS. You will need to download your appropriate language version! This post @ Stomped.com has links for the international versions of the patch.
If you have read all of this, followed the instructions, and are still having the problem, e-mail me with details. Also throw me an email if the above does indeed fix your problem. Thanks.
[ HL:CS Retail Map-Pack] [ Thursday, March 15, 2001 ]
We're going to be putting out a map-pack for owners of Half-Life: Counter-Strike Retail, which includes all the maps included in the mod version that aren't in the retail patch. These maps were not included since Valve does not own the rights to them and cannot include them in their upgrade. Look for the pack later on today, Thursday.
[ CS Windows 1.1 Released!] [ Tuesday, March 13, 2001 ]
Counter-Strike 1.1 Windows client is now out! Head over to the Downloads to start downloading. There are two windows files: csv1011.exe, a 20 meg 1.0 > 1.1 upgrade patch; and csv11full.exe, an 87 meg full install. 1.1 will work without HL 1.1.0.6, which should be out in the next few days. Be careful if you have custom CS models or an edited .wad file, the upgrade patch may not work (you'll probably want to get the full install).
Server admins, note that the fadetoblack option will not completely work until tomorrow with the new HL update (the black won't be completely black). Linux admins, see the post below for a small Linux patch. All admins, see the text below about running 1.1 until the HL update is out.
This release is only for those who are using the Half-Life Mod version of CS (not retail), ie those who have Half-Life and use CS as a free mod. HL: CS Retail owners please note that the retail patch will be out tomorrow. Stay tuned right here to cs.net for news on that.

Attn Server Admins: Please read this, as it is very important concerning 1.1:
If you decide to download the new version of Counter-Strike and update your server before the new Half-Life update is released tomorrow morning, you will run into two problems:
1) The server variables servercfgfile, lservercfgfile, mapcyclefile,
motdfile, and logsdir have been put in the engine so they can be set through the command line.
If you run the new Counter-Strike server with the old engine, these
variables do not exist (because they are not in the new CS server and are not in the old engine). This means you will not be able to use your server.cfg, listenserver.cfg, motd.txt, and mapcycle.txt files until you update to the new engine.
The new version of Counter-Strike will still run and will allow you to play, but at the end of the map when the server tries to cycle it will just loop because there are no maps in the map cycle (it will be unable to load your mapcycle.txt file). You can set "mp_timelimit 0" so the map does not try to cycle, or you can have an admin on hand to manually do a "changelevel ...."
when the level is done.
2) Any chat the players type after the round is over while the scoreboard is showing will appear partially garbled. There was a bug in the engine that we fixed to go along with this new feature (being able to chat at the end of the round).
Both of these problems will go away tomorrow morning when the new Half-Life update is released.
Thanks very much to Stem, Dakota, Haste, Frank Nuccio, Kris, Stratos, Brian Steele, Erik Johnson, Eric Smith, and Bizzyblaster.

Also of note is the fact that 1.1 will include a sequel to DaveJ's popular de_dust map, de_dust2. Not to worry, the original is still in there (the new one is a supplement).

v1.0 Player Model Shots -- Tuesday, November 7, 2000
We're going to be announcing in a few days the release date for the Half-life: Counter-Strike retail package. It's coming quite soon, so stay around the site for the information. If you haven't seen the ads for it in various gaming magazines (PC Gamer, CGW, etc) check out this scan from over at CSnation. Here are two brand new screenshots showing two of the redone Terrorist player models along with the new H&K UMP .45:
Also, sadly due to time constraints N@rby's cs_thunder will not make v1.0 -- but expect to see it in a later release. I also want to reiterate the fact that CS will still be free and downloadable from this site. The new retail package is only for those who don't have HL yet and just want to buy Counter-Strike and other Valve multiplayer content. More model shots to come in a few days...
H&K UMP .45 Shots -- Tuesday, October 31, 2000

As everyone no doubt knows by now, Valve has released their newest v1.1.0.4 patch. You'll need it if you haven't already downloaded and installed it. It should fix the many problems people have had connecting to games. If it does or doesn't, throw me an e-mail and let me know.
N@rby's new map -- Thursday, October 19, 2000
We apologize for the number of days without a news update. We've all been very busy answering Jcal's questions. CS v1.0 will be ready to roll as soon HL: CS goes gold. Recall that 1.0 will feature the weapons seen below as well as redone player models that take advantage of Valve's new animation blending technology. Here are a few shots from N@rby's new map cs_thunder, which will be included with HL: CS (1.0):
New Five-Seven Renders -- Friday, October 6, 2000
Here are a couple shots of Gooseman's latest handy work, the FN Five-Seven pistol. This one will be added to the CT's arsenal of handguns.
Version 1.0 Weapon Shots -- Friday, September 29, 2000
Here are a couple shots of the new SIG SG-550 Sniper Rifle which will be featured in CS version 1.0 (note that there will not be a beta 8, as we're finally leaving the beta stages). Also note that this is the version that will ship with Half-life: Counter-Strike retail. This new gun will probably be CT only. Have a look:
